When Wyatt Bernstein, the only son among four kids, is reluctantly taken to Build-A-Bestie store to make his own stuffed animal for his birthday, he creates a boy-filled version of a puppet he names Crash. Wyatt, desperate for a brother, designs his new puppet with highly masculine characteristics such as the use of ninja weapons, very strong opinions and the desire to build and destroy things. But most importantly Wyatt designs Crash to be his confidant and friend. Crash comes to life as Wyatt's loud-mouthed surrogate brother who knows no limits. Crash finds Wyatt living in a household full of sisters, including his mother, popular 16-year-old Amanda, fashion-forward middle sister Cleo and assertive 6-year-old Jasmine. As Crash assumes the responsibility of looking after and protecting Wyatt, adventures of chaos and family love ensues.

Wyatt Bernstein is reluctantly taken to a Build-A-Bestie, a build-your-own-stuffed-animal store, for his birthday. While there, Wyatt creates a boy-filled version of a puppet he names Crash who comes to life as the brother he always wanted. Crash finds Wyatt living in a household full of females, including his mother, popular 16-year-old Amanda, fashion-forward middle sister Cleo and assertive 6-year-old Jasmine. Crash comes up with a plan to help Wyatt get his own bedroom but his plan soon backfires, jeopardizing his new relationship with Wyatt. Remembering that Wyatt had created Crash as someone who would always look out for and protect him, Crash accepts responsibility for his actions and works to fix the problems he's caused.

When a celebrity bug expert is scheduled to come to Wyatt's school, Wyatt tries to excuse himself from attending due to his fear of bugs. Wyatt then reveals to Crash a terrifying incident he had with a tarantula during a past Halloween party causing him to develop a fear of bugs. Crash attempts to help Wyatt overcome his fears through various methods, including singing a song, hypnosis and by covering Wyatt with bugs while he slept. However, when Crash visits a mustached doctor due to a reaction from a bug bite, Crash develops a fear of moustaches. Together, Wyatt and Crash learn to face their fears and attend the bug assembly at school. Mel tells Amanda she is not permitted to see a horror film until she has a chance to preview it first; however, Amanda sneaks off to see the movie anyway causing her to become scared afterwards. Cleo teases her sister for being afraid.

Crash heckles Wyatt and Pesto's school basketball coach because the team keeps losing games. When the coach quits, Crash steps in as the basketball team's new coach. Wyatt then tries to help Crash learn to coach by teaching him about famous coaches from the National Basketball Association. Instead of learning the coach's good qualities, Crash focuses on their bad qualities and becomes a mean spirited coach that pushes the team too hard. Crash brings a tall adult onto the team to help them win. After becoming frustrated with Crash's coaching techniques, the basketball team fires Crash as coach. Mel helps Crash learn that being a mean coach is not the best method of teaching. Cleo convinces Crash to let her design the team's new jerseys. Needing money for new sunglasses, Amanda is hired by Cleo to help with the new fashions. Not happy with Amanda's work, Cleo fires Amanda from the job.

Due to recent incidents and problems, Mel comes to realize that Crash is not understanding much about life among humans. Even though Amanda and Cleo are campaigning to get rid of Crash, Mel understands how important he is to Wyatt. So, to help Crash learn more and have a better understanding of his new world, Mel decides to send Crash to school with Wyatt. Crash stays up late the night before he starts school watching continual television programming about life in prison, which causes him to think school is like prison. Crash challenges a bully and wins, which causes him and Wyatt to become the leaders at school. However, in an attempt to leave school early to go snowboarding, Crash pulls the fire alarm causing him and Wyatt to get into trouble. To protect his new friend, Wyatt accepts blame for the incident.

While at the arcade Amanda meets a new guy named Trey who invites her to a party he is having. Trey requests that Amanda bring fat-free, gluten-free, carrot ginger muffins to the party. Amanda struggles, unsuccessfully, to bake the muffins. Amanda practices having a conversation with Trey to try and calm her nerves. Wyatt, Pesto and Crash, all wanting to attend the party, make various attempts to get invited. Wyatt draws a fake tattoo on his arm and wears a motorcycle helmet in an attempt to fit in. Pesto practices a new style of walk, wears gaudy jewelry and brings cheese as a gift. And Crash, desperate for an invitation, becomes fixated on improving his body. When a drink concoction he created backfires and causes him to inflate, Cleo uses a vacuum to help. Crash then begins body training to improve his body but becomes enraged and difficult to deal with due to his intense workouts.

In order for Wyatt to be able to go away snowboarding with his friends he needs to prove to Mel that he is responsible. Mel leaves the house and leaves Amanda in charge of the kids. Crash convinces Amanda to leave and let them be responsible for themselves. While Amanda is away, Mr. Poulos stops by the apartment to perform maintainence on the air conditioner's vents. Mr. Poulos becomes suspicious that the kids are home alone, breaking the rule that no children should be left alone without supervision, when he finds Crash stuck in the toilet. Crash and Wyatt convince Mr. Poulos that Amanda is watching them but that she just went out for food. Wyatt goes to the arcade to get Amanda, and Jasmine gets stuck in the vent while playing a game of hide and seek. After forgetting to put the vent's cover back on, Mr. Poulos and the kids agree not to tell Mel about the day's troubles.

Wyatt and Pesto achieve the high score on a video game and celebrate the fact that their photograph will be included on a wall of fame in the arcade. Wyatt becomes frustrated with Crash and Pesto not being friends. He wants nothing more than the three of them to spend time together. So, Wyatt arranges for Pesto and Crash to spend some time together without him in hopes that they begin to get along with each other. The plan backfires when they become such good friends that they start having fun without Wyatt. Wyatt builds a robot which he hopes to use to keep Cleo on her side of the bedroom. While wrestling on the couch for control of the remote control and Crash's security blanket, Cleo and Crash break the couch. Between hiding the fact that the couch is broken and their attempts to fix it, Cleo and Crash worry that they will get into trouble if Mel finds out.

After Crash unknowingly takes items from a variety of people and places, Wyatt teaches him that it is wrong and has him return everything, starting with the prizes from the arcade. But on their mission, Wyatt and Crash run into trouble when they meet Doris, a con artist asking for donations.

Wyatt learns that the person he has been competing with in an online football game is Mr. Poulos. Amanda and her friend Jennifer communicate via text messaging even though they are right next to each other. Crash, new to computer technology, sets off to learn as much as he can as quickly as he can. Cleo becomes frustrated with Crash when he deletes a project she is working on for school from her computer. When a nearby communications tower is knocked down, Wyatt, Crash and the group lose access to the internet and their phones. They are forced to find other ways to achieve their goals. Amanda and Jennifer are forced to talk with each other. Cleo has to use an encyclopedia for her school project. Wyatt, Mr. Poulos and the rest of the group attempt to settle their disputes by playing a game of indoor football.

At Jasmine's 6th birthday party, Crash falls for a puppet, Lola, who he believes is real and begins dating her. When Wyatt discovers that Lola's puppeteer is taking advantage of Crash, Wyatt must find a way to prove to Crash that she is not real.

Crash, Wyatt, and Pesto are excited to ride a dangerous new roller coaster called the Decapitator. After waiting in line for three hours, Crash learns he’s too short to get on. Realizing he is shorter than average, Crash becomes frustrated with his height. Mr. Poulos helps Crash learn about the benefits of being short. School picture day is around the corner, and Mel wants to make sure Wyatt doesn’t injure or disfigure himself beforehand, so she threatens to donate his birthday money to charity if she doesn’t get a good picture. Cleo takes advantage of picture day by creating her own cosmetic line to sell to her classmates at school. Except, not all of her products work as well as she hopes they will.

In an effort to have Wyatt spend more time helping others, Mel forces Wyatt and Crash to play with their neighbor Gerry, who turns out to be an incredibly annoying and rude kid. Mel still wants Wyatt and Crash to give Gerry a second chance, and tells them how hard it was for her when she was the “new kid” in school. When she doesn’t believe Crash and Wyatt when they say how horrible their play date was, they trick Mel into hanging out with Gerry’s mom, who is just as annoying as her son.

Crash strikes it rich when the Bernstein's neighbor, Ms. Lopez, moves away and leaves Crash her cats and a fortune in cash.

Mel and the girls have fallen sick and it's up to Wyatt and Crash to care for them, especially as the guys won't be allowed to go on their big camping trip until they're feeling better.

Wyatt stands up to the school bully, The Slapper, after he steals Cleo’s backpack. That night, The Slapper kidnaps Crash and holds him hostage in exchange for Wyatt’s bike. Wyatt comes up with a plan to convince The Slapper that Crash will be too annoying to keep, and that he’d rather have a bike than Crash. When Crash hears Wyatt call him annoying, he questions whether or not Wyatt likes him at all. After Crash destroys the living room on morning, Mel jokes that she wishes she could kill him. When he disappears, Amanda thinks she actually did and becomes afraid of what her own mother could be capable of.
